Re: Old SD (or microSD) cards

Old small SD are useful for old pi models to enable USB / network boot.

Just put the single file bootcode.bin on an otherwise empty SD card, and that enables them to boot from USB or network.

Re: Destroy pi sd card... On purpose if removed

Have your licence/key online, so it can be permanently revoked on suspicious access (starting in another pi/location).

Re: WHY is ssh disabled by default..?

If you have an android phone you can put the micro sd card in that,
then use the files app to create a file called SSH.txt on the card.

(or create a pi sd card from scratch with the android app here:

You're replying to a post that is SEVEN YEARS AGO

Not surprisingly, openjdk is now on newer versions than 7

try jdk 11

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install openjdk-11-jdk

Re: Why is NOOBs suggested to be used by Raspberry beginners?

It is a challenge posed by the Foundation to stop the unmotivated from using the Pi. To install either `NOOBS` or `Raspbian` you need access to a computer with a SD Card writer ; ` No computer needed, just an app on your phone - check my sig https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=1...

Apparently Windows 10 Smartscreen will stop blocking it after a few thousand installs (or so RPi hopes ! )

Re: "Introducing Raspberry Pi Imager, our new imaging utility"

During this process, Raspberry Pi Imager also caches the downloaded operating system image – that is to say, it saves a local copy on your computer, so you can program additional SD cards without having to download the file again Note that it only stores the last one, then deletes it when you start...

You don't even need a computer to prepare an SD card for the pi, just your android phone:

Yes, and the graphs in this thread are all based on worldwide sales too.

I've not seen a breakdown of pi sales by country ?

Re: Graph & timeline of Pi Sales

This snippet from twitter: Since it opened last year, the Raspberry Pi Store has sold 8,180 Raspberry Pis. That's 1.3% of all the Raspberry Pi units sold in the UK in the last twelve months! https://twitter.com/Raspberry_Pi/status/1225746050591449088?s=20 So a bit of maths from that shows 12 month U...

Nothing much for the pi4 chip yet,
but for the videocore IV (Pi 3 and below) you can try:

Depends how old the ring is, v1 or v2 ? People have had more success reverse enginerring v1 https://community.home-assistant.io/t/saving-the-latest-ring-door-bell-video-locally/30196 There seems to be quite a bit if you google "ring.com API" - though these are unofficial API - there's no official ve...

Re: Future of raspberry pi - software related

This is a nice to have feature(may be very difficult to implement), but how about a forum app that comes pre-installed on the raspberry pi. This way, pi users get exposed to the forum automatically and they get their questions cleared. The interface should be fairly easy to use, just like browser v...

Small quantity pi zero exists as the WH version

Cutting or desoldering the header really isn't so hard if you want to slim it down.

The following works ok 1. Install QEMU for Windows https://www.qemu.org/download/#windows 2. Grab the kernels and dtb from https://github.com/dhruvvyas90/qemu-rpi-kernel 3. Download a raspbian image & extract it https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ 4. Start qemu "c:\Program Files\qemu\qem...

The Qemu/wine method described by novaspirit isn't working in Buster last I checked (problem with wine x86)
It does work ok in Stretch.

486 speed, so only ok for some GUI apps, not games ( use DOSbox for those)

Re: Is there a Raspberry Pi 4 "Slim" version?

Any non standard pi, non mass produced is going to cost more, not less. A supplier could offer a desoldering service, but would you pay e.g an extra £5 for a pi4 with unsoldered gpio pins and / or ethernet /usb ? There have been instances in the past where I'd have happily bought 5-10x premodified p...
