Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

Fantastic news, got my 4GB order in earlier ! Looks like everything I wanted is there: - Faster CPU - Proper gigabit ethernet - USB3 - Oodles of RAM - Buster Struggling to find minor cons, but: - No IR (but cheap to add on) - No SATA ( USB3 - SATA is cheap though) - Single CSI (so compute module sti...

Yes it's great for non interactive / graphical stuff.

Also take a look at trinket.io if you want to use pygame in browser ( or tkinter with a subscription)

There is a bare desktop download if you don't want all the apps preinstalled, or even raspbian lite if you don't even want the desktop. Raspbian stretch full desktop & all apps: 2GB download, 5.6GB installed Raspbian stretch desktop: 1GB download, 3.4GB installed Raspbian Lite: 400MB download, 1.9GB...

Re: how to change the logo boot ?

Replace the file /usr/share/plymouth/themes/pix/splash.png with your own (or just remove it for a blank screen)

Add logo.nologo to the end of the line in /boot/cmdline.txt to remove the four raspberries (on pi3)

The whole page is full of errors and needs rewriting, I have offered to do this, but I will not do it on git-hub[...] If rpi would like me rewrite its Samba page, they only have to ask, but it will be written in the form of a text document Please post it here or a link to somewhere with it rewritte...

Re: Nexdock 2 - another shot

I have the original NexDock here, and its been fine,
seems they have addressed the main drawback of that:
bluetooth keyboard&trackpad (which aren't the best and can't be used pre-boot)

The new one connects the keybaord and trackpad by USB

Re: Sharing an existing folder using Samba

I'd be happy to accept a pull request on changes to the docs in this area. And I would be quite willing to totally rewrite your Samba page, just not on git-hub , we left there and went to git-lab. I am a member of the Samba team and I have been trying, for some time, to point out to the Rpi team th...

Python multiprocessing is now very easy to use. I used that in a practical way to ping the local subnet to discover all hosts: https://github.com/mikerr/Pingu Relevent part code is: def ping: .... hosts = [] for i in range(255): hosts.append("192.168.0." + str(i)) pool = ThreadPool(100) results = po...

Yes chrome extensions work on any Chrome browser, on any OS or platform, ARM or x86, same for Firefox.

I use lastpass and it works fine on the pi via chrome extension

If it has the wrong revision, and so loading the wrong dtb,
would renaming the dtb file on SD work?
(Obviously just as an awful hack to get a working unit)

Re: Rpi 3B+ over Asus Tinker Board

For web browsing / chromium the Tinkerboard is far faster and more useable than a Pi3. 2GB RAM makes the difference - it's actually my daily PC, and same SoC is used in chromebook flip / chromebit. The pi obviously has a much bigger community, and more maker focussed. the small unofficial community ...

Re: x86 on the Raspberry Pi with jessie chroot

Pi386, however, lets you run 32-bit x86 software on your Pi, including WINE. Since Pi386 is an emulation layer, the version of WINE you use on it is compiled for the i386 architecture and therefore allows execution of 32-bit x86 Windows software on the Pi. You should really mention it's QEMU that i...

Qemu (> 2.11) now includes a raspi2 machinetype So the following works, just copy the files bcm2709-rpi-2-b.dtb and kernel7.img from the fat partition of the SD card, and start qemu: qemu-system-arm -M raspi2 -dtb bcm2709-rpi-2-b.dtb -kernel kernel7.img -drive format=raw,file=2018-06-27-raspbian-str...

Nothing new, you're treading the same steps we did in 2012ish... https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=12727 Follow that thread to see how it's done, but some patches will have been integrated into qemu by now. (And lots of posters moaned it wasn't possible or would be too slow the...
