Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Heatsink vs Fan vs Flirc Case

On my RPi4 /4G it was running at 85+ C
So I hacked an existing heatsink and attached it with heat sink compound, so it is now running at 55C
Still feels kind of hot ....

Re: Why is the RPi4 being advertised as a desktop computer?

OK I admit it I didn't RTFM - but hey, I had the real thing to play with. You can't expect common sense at my age (66). The cheap bit is a bit misleading, with what do you compare it? A "cheap" PC at say £200? A bare bones PC, probably £200 as well. So by the time you buy a RPi (£55), scrounge a USB...

Re: Why is the RPi4 being advertised as a desktop computer?

OK, so running all the above programmes ( plus a couple more like a Google Drive with a couple of documents open) give me a new warning that I hadn't seen before - a thermometer - in the red! When I checked the CPU temperature it is running at 81C. OK, so I guess the heat sink is a good idea if you ...

Re: Why is the RPi4 being advertised as a desktop computer?

In this day and age isn't the OS becoming irrelevant for MOST users? Now I exclude anyone who is on this forum from "MOST users" - we all want our favourite nerdy tools to run on it. "MOST users" only want a browser, an office suite (well word processor and spreadsheet) and an email client. Individu...

Re: Remote control for VLC or RPi

Tried a Logitech mouse - works great - about 10 foot range.

Course the problem now is that the text is too small on the screen! I had a search but it doesn't appear that there is an option to increase the font size of the menus :-(

Re: Remote control for VLC or RPi

Tried a "wireless" mouse - it is ideal to run VLC, the way I use it I don't actually need a keyboard! But the downside, the mouse I tried only has a range of about six feet (2 metres) :-( But I assume that other mouse "wireless" technologies / brands offer greater range. Any idea which offers the gr...

Re: Remote control for VLC or RPi

Hmm.. interesting option. Currently I have two RPis running VLC. On one I use an (existing) Logitech K400 keyboard, which is good, but even that is a bit big for using from the sofa! The other one I am using a Rii X8 mini wireless keyboard. It works - but the trackpad action takes a bit of getting u...

Remote control for VLC or RPi

I am using VLC as my video player - it is great! Now I am getting fussy. I have found various Apps that seem to allow remote control of VLC from phones. This page lists more than I expected! https://wiki.videolan.org/Control_VLC_from_an_Android_Phone/ Titles include VLC Mobile Remote (which looks li...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

So it has now been running well for a week - GREAT. Very happy and in fact I am watching a recording right now..... Only one word of caution. It's really nice to use the GUI, and of course I started running other "stuff" on the GUI at the same time as watching a video on VLC - I was running a Python...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

So I have now received and added the Codec. Seems to be running fine - I have now run 2 recordings. I guess it is now "fixed" and my conclusion from my set up is that VLC NEEDS the power of the RPi3B+ to run. I would be interested to hear anyone else's experience on how they got on with VLC. I will ...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

OK Next test. I am now trying it on a RPi3B+ with an up to date standard Stretch build. It doesn't have the Codec (I only own one and I think it is tied to the hardware). I am running only the wired LAN and have the WLan switched off. Also running my Python temperature programme and htop, but nothin...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

Spoke too soon! Ran a 90 minute video and it crashed after 65 minutes.
So I will need to think of something else to try :-(

Just as an aside, I ran VLC on my laptop and it played a 1 hour video with no problems, so I am assuming that my file source (Humax Freeview box with DLNA) and network are OK.

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

Well I may have found the problem or at least a work around. As I set up Raspbian I left it as standard as possible. Then I thought I would use a wired LAN to give it the best possible bandwidth. However, I left the WLan on. The Pi came up with two ip addresses and I am wondering if that causes cont...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

Thanks guys. My recordings are all SD, so I don't think I am putting a huge load on the GPU, plus it has the codec, so I am assuming that makes it's life easier. So maybe just going for a 3B+ might be the answer..... LTolledo - did you get any helpful ideas? Maybe just going back to Kodi (OSMC) is t...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

Thanks Joel, but I don't think that's the case. The OS is a fresh build of the latest Rasbian (full version with all the bits) with no changes. I have kept it as standard as I can to avoid as many issues as I can. Only configuration changes have been adding the codec, changing the graphics memory an...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

Well I THOUGHT I was making progress..... I rebooted the Pi, left the MPEG video accelerator, 256MB of GPU memory, and the overclocking all in place, but tried a different video - and it ran a whole 1 hour programme !!! Woo Hoo! So, like any other glutton for punishment (and I am getting bored) I tr...

Re: VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

Pretty sure my PSU is OK.
As I mentioned earlier it is an 8A supply which runs 3 RPis (RPi1, Rpi3 and RPi3B+) and I don't get the "lightning bolt" low voltage warning on any of them.

Third try! Ran for about 8 minutes. Overclocked to arm_freq=1300, core_freq=500, sdram_freq=500, over_voltage=600. Added the sysbench utility Also added a python programme to monitor the CPU temp. Idling it was at 45C, it stabiliised at 52C after about 8 minutes just before it fell over. I assume th...

Re: VLC crashing RPi3

So first attempt at a cure! I was guessing that it could maybe be the GPU memory so I increased that from the 128M to 256M and tried again. This time I ran "htop" in a terminal window using SSH, while the VLC display was in a window on the Raspbian desktop. It was all OK for the first 35 minutes of ...

VLC 3.0.3 is crashing my RPi3

I am trying to use the VLC player on my RPi3. It starts playing fine, but after about 15 or 20 minutes of a one hour programme it completely hangs the Pi to the point where the only choice is to power it down and back up. It is a fresh build of Raspbian Stretch, it has been updated & upgraded, it ha...

Re: Pi Zero W media centre

Sounds like the RPiZero W with VLC falls short in either network or processing power. I have tried Stretch and VLC on a Pi3B+ (wireless) and it works fine. It is streaming video from my new Humax 5000T Freeview box which has a DLNA server capability. When I tried a RPiZeroW also running Stretch and ...

Humax 5000T and VLC - does it work?

I am about to upgrade my Freeview box to a Humax 5000T which has in it's spec a DLNA server. To play the media I would like to use the new VLC media player in the current Raspbian upgrade. Now in theory it SHOULD work..... ... but has anyone tried it? I would probably test it on a RPi3B+ but hopeful...

Can RPi run "messages.android" - can we now send text messages

Has anyone got the new (?) Android "Messages for Web" (messages.android.com) working on a Pi? I have it working on my PC and it let's you generate texts and send them out, but the normal interface is a web page. My guess is that it should work on a Pi (before you ask, no I haven't tried it yet) So t...

OSError [Errno 5] picamera intermittent fault

I am using a RPi3 and a picamera programmed in Python3. Every now and again (every few hours, last time it was 1hour and 50minutes) seems to just hang. I can ping it, but I can't log on via SSH. Only way to get it back is to power it down - but of course I can't shut it down from the command line!!!...

Re: How to enable Server Side Includes on Apache2 on Raspian

Hi Knute, I had already found the manual page and had done everything except the "XBitHack on". I had tried all the other bits, but my index.html has the "html" extension. I had tried renaming it with an "shtml" extension, but of course it didn't load. So it looks like the XBitHack was what was wron...
