Just had the same problem. My solution was to put the SD Card in another cardreader... then it did work.

for non-expensive 3d printing, try to locare a FabLab near you. wikipedia: fablab. you may also consider laser cutting plywood or plastic sheet material. Laser-cutters are also availble in any FabLab.
