Re: PiTab: Yet another Raspberry Pi tablet

Updates 2019/08/18: Installed Raspian Buster. I'm a believer in fresh installs, there are never any upgrade issues. Yes, it's a bit more work, I think it''s worth it. My PCs are going to stay on Stretch for a good long while, though, I haven't run into any problem yet on Stretch that I can't solve i...

PiTab: Yet another Raspberry Pi tablet

Credit to Michael Castor and his PiPad, without which I would have never been inspired to this. And to Liz for her writeup: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/wooden-tablet-michael-castors-pipad/ Now I know it's been done, and there is even a kit complete with case and battery which would be the easie...

Re: How to set screen brightness using existing buttons?

Might try searching Synaptic for "dell" or whatever make you might have. I have installed some utilities I found that way on my Dell Latitude E4300, forget the names right now, but the factory fn-arrow-up and fn-arrow-down control the brightness just like it's supposed to. However, it's running 64-b...

If you're going to be using dd, spend a couple hours (at least) reading up on it. Like most powerful medicine, if not used properly it can kill you. @fruitoftheloom's suggestion is sound and safer, but dd is an extremely valuable tool that you might want to get familiar with. "man dd" is a good plac...

Re: To simon: could the next version include arandr as well?

Suggest you search the Debian User Forums, seems I recall seeing some extensive discussions regarding touchpad tapping and the xinput drivers. First step would be to determine which touchpad you have. Try lspci or, in some cases, lsusb IMHO all the requests like "you should include (insert your favo...

Re: Dual boot laptop running Debian x86 with the RPI desktop?

You should have no real problems with this setup except that, as noted above, whatever coding you might do on an x86 machine won't be directly compatible with the RPi. Any competent computer shop should be able to install it, however I recommend you and your son gang up and do it yourselves. Install...

You should also check the Debian forums when you have problems with this distro:

The RPi desktop is based on LXDE so I would guess this problem is related.

However, you may have to pay to use it: that is almost certainly the reason it is not installed by default.
It may even be free to use, but restricted in some way (such as being prohibited to copy). Reading the license is in order.

Re: /boot 100% full ... what to do????

This sort of thing is why I don't recommend using a VM as a general rule. This is a perfectly elegant OS; boot the machine to this OS rather than attempting to get it to run inside the confines of another. Install it to its own partition(s) if you see the need and dual-boot.

Re: Can I use my RPi to make a bootable usb(pc)x86 Debian?

Jessie is still quite a viable OS, and will still be supported for a couple more years. Your little Atom-powered machine will love it. On the other hand, the more I use Stretch, the more I like it. I haven't run into a single problem under Stretch that I haven't been able to fix, and I've been setti...

At your mention, I checked out BL. It does seem light and stable. It just looked like too much work to get it to the point where I'd actually want to use it. The RPi-desktop, OTOH, is pretty much there OOTB and even comes with pretty wallpapers!

Alternatively, if you can connect both the Pi and your Laptop to the same Wifi network you can use SSH or VNC to access the Pi from your Laptop. Or an ftp server. Or Samba. Even Bluetooth. Both units are Intel Atom processors, should work fine with x86 Debian. Octoprint, on the other hand, may not work well with Debian, perhaps not at all. Recommend you contact Octoprint. Incidentally you may find very little or no improvement in performance in an Atom-powered machine vs. a Pi3B.

Thanks guys. I’d realised the issue about Ubuntu PPAs and Debian after posting above. I removed the repository and am compiling from source.
Good plan. Hopefully any Debian sysadmins that read the earlier posts can recover from their heart attacks now.

Calling it RPiD rather than RPD removes any confusion with XRDP and such-like.
Possibly I'm just being something-or-other, as my better half would say. But I'd say: Debian x86 RPiDE. Not ambiguous, descriptive to anyone who might be interested, accurate, legal.

I also have a problem adding a raspbian commandline version to VMware Fusion. I tried a new system and used the .img as boot / OS, but this would not load. The only two options I can think of are the bios type: UEFI or standard. Both don't seem to work. Extracting the IMG gives me only a boot parti...

Sorry, been a bit behind. Eye surgery and online forums don't mix well. Anyway: You are using Debian Stretch. PPAs are for Ubuntu and derivatives. Re: Issue on using USB 3.0/3.1 drive on Raspberry Pi Desktop

I recommend installing firmware-linux-nonfree from the Debian repositories. Sounds like a firmware problem, Dell often uses proprietary drivers (my E4300 requires firmware-iwlwifi for the Intel wifi chip, for instance). Can't say for sure that's it, but certainly worth a try.
