I've taken to using Status remote plugs, you can pick them up from pretty much any UK supermarket. They run on 433.97Mhz and your Pi can control them directly using https://github.com/GarethWright/pihat and a 20cm piece of wire attached to GPIO4 :) That the same technique I used for my Siri controll...
