Re: PiNet for Buster and the Pi 4B

So I have a Pi 4B in front of me and an Ubuntu 18.04.3 VM installing currently, as tonight I have been able to set aside some time, so perhaps it will get a little closer... Actual progress can be followed on this branch https://github.com/PiNet/PiNet/tree/buster-development It would appear that th...

Re: PiNet for Buster and the Pi 4B

The link to PiNet is here: http://pinet.org.uk/ Is PiNet still developed? Are there any plans for Buster to allow the Pi 4B to work as clients? Since the 4B has Gigabit Ethernet, can it be used as the server? I think it is a matter of public knowledge, gleaned from social media, that PiNet is the p...

Re: Pinet hosted media center on RPI 4?

Do you think we will be able to convert current server configurations into the new version that will run on the RPI 4 later on in the future? In the past, moves in OS involve a new Raspbian OS build for PiNet. Given the Raspberry Pi Foundation don't recommend inplace upgrades, that is the path I am...

Re: Pinet hosted media center on RPI 4?

The other thing, I would say, that will hold back pinet is that PXE boot isn't possible yet... https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/booteeprom.md PiNet uses a kernel/initramfs based boot process, so the kernel and a custom initramfs both are on the SD card anyway with all ...

Re: Scratch 3.0 please fix it NOW

As long as the graphics updates are included in the PiNet repository as I just spent a week building a PiNet server to use with my Primary Classes in school. Also I hope someone roles out Stretch with a new update of PiNet as this will make me very happy! PiNET is not the responsibility of the Rasp...

Re: Scratch 3.0 please fix it NOW

Don't even get me started on PiNet using the Beta version to work with the 3B+! I think it is important to add that PiNet is maintained, built and support provided for it by one person (aka me) in my free time, for free... It will never be able to live up to the same standards you might expect from...

I have installed Pinet on Ubuntu 18.04 in Oracle VirtualBox and created about 8 users. My RPI B+ has the PiBoot files on a 32Gb SDHC card and i get a login screen when i boot it up. Yet when i type any username and pwd i get an "invalid password error" . i created a csv file and imported the users ...

Re: Assistance gathering data on PiNet sessions

Hello, I am looking for some assistance with a request I've received. I am running a PiNet server with ~10 Raspberry Pi fat clients connecting to it. I need two things: 1. The total number of logins/sessions opened to the PiNet server in the last 30 days 2. The time that those sessions remained log...

Re: Read-only SD cards for school Lab?

It does certainly sound like PiNet (or PiServer) would be the answer here. I can only speak for PiNet, but in the case of PiNet the SD card image only used for the first ~5-10 seconds of boot, after which it is marked as read only. The main OS itself is then pulled over the network. It of course com...

Thank you for the information, really helpful... just need to find switches and rewire the room again :? thought we could get away with wireless. Re: Pinet control applications seen by clients

PiNet lead developer here. Unfortunately I am not sure of a nice way to do what you are after, certainly not cleanly anyway. You can configure a Pi to auto log in with a specific user by its MAC address, but that user can still in theory access every application installed on the base image which all...

Hi, The Pinet client SD card boots up just fine on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ where I can login and do stuff :-) i.e shows up in the PiNet Servers dashboard. etc... but if you place the same PiNet client SD card into a Pi Zero W you get a rainbow screen from the very beginning. 1) I've only just started wo...

Hi GBaman, thank you for your reply. If I understand you correctly... 1) If I want to demo my setup to others with say only 4 x Raspberry Pi 3B+ (i.e 1 for the server and 3 for Pinet clients) , Pinet Server will install on a 3B+ and run with the clients (3 x Pi 3B+ machines) booting up accordingly....

Hi and thanks to everyone who is contributing to this post, the Alpha version DID boot up as expected (really grateful), but have not fully tested it yet. Why still Jessie ? surely Stretch on 3B+ would be better ?? I very much agree, but a major upgrade like Jessie-Stretch for most schools only makes sense over the summer holidays, but many schools will increase the number of Pis they use throughout the year and obviously will only buy 3B+ after it i...

Re: Raspberry Pi Computer Lab for High Needs School

One of my more tech-savy students figured out how to share the files with the teacher. The individual users have to grant permission for the teacher to view files and the desktop. It works flawlessly. Example: The student writes an essay, and the teacher can view after being saved. The teacher ente...
