Re: fpc-compiled programs don't run..?

GUI programs should run directly out of the box. Did you follow the instructions at http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Laza ... spberry_Pi?

Re: Designing a GUI

The main advantage is that Lazarus is mostly wysiwyg and very rich in widgets and bindings for most linux widget sets. It is also the only real two way (code and design - design and code) IDE I found for the Pi till date and the executables generate UIs that are very responsive on the Pi. I agree, ...

Re: free pascal / lazarus

I am now experimenting with IO, I hope to produce an Lazarus Raspberry pi IO package. The idea being you could drop a control on to a form representing an LCD display or an LED and after assigning some pins you would have an instant working LCD or led with an appropriate external circuit attached.I...

@bobdee:

Great. Your code also well demonstrates the advantages of Unix that treats everything as file.

Re: free pascal / lazarus

Installing Lazarus on RPi is now quite easy in Raspbian Wheezy. I have written short instructions in the Lazarus Wiki at http://wiki.freepascal.org/Lazarus_on_Raspberry_Pi.

Please expand as required.

Anyone know of a decent, free, COBOL compiler for Linux?

You might want to try OpenCOBOL for Linux (http://www.opencobol.org)

if you use the windowed IDE (Lazarus), programs tend to get quite big with the default settings.

Yes, but after stripping debugging code the application get much smaller.

Re: Free Pascal compiler for the Pi (freepascal.org)

I would even go further and not only embrace Free Pascal but also the complete Lazarus IDE. It should not be a greater problem to implement it on the Raspberry PI as it is available for several Linux flavours.
