OK, found the solution at http://www.fritz-hut.com/tag/raspberry-pi/ . Find out what user runs PHP: <?php echo exec('whoami'); ?> For me it was www-data . The serial connection is owned by the dialout group so we need to add www-data to the dialout group to enable the PHP script to access the serial...
