Re: obconf issue following upgrade to Stretch 4.14.79-v7+

I too have just done a sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and uname -a says Linux Raspberrypi 4.14.79-v7+. As for you, obconf does not seem to work, nor does lxappearance. That command brings up the error Failed to load module "atk-bridge".

Items in preferences menu not working

The Openbox Configuration Manager and the Theme and Appearance items in the Preferences submenu appear to be doing nothing but producing the eggtimer hourglass. How do I get these working again? And how do I find out which versions of Linux and the GUI I have? Should not the desktop be providing an ...

Inserting text with a single keystroke

In RISC OS I can program certain keys so that by pressing them my email address, say, is inserted wherever the input focus is. I would like to be able to do this in Raspbian. I tried inserting into ~/.config/openbox/lxde-pi-rc.xml a keybinding that ran the command "echo <my email-address>", but it d...

Re: Help! Start menu icon has disappeared.

Panic over. The file manager has an icon on the taskbar, and I used its Go menu option to get to the application to reset the default theme.

Help! Start menu icon has disappeared.

Using Raspbian Stretch. The main menu icon is no longer there. I think I must have selected a theme that does not show it. Now I cannot shut down or reset the appearance preferences to the default. Help please!

Can openbox display filetypes?

I am using Raspbian Stretch with the openbox-lxde GUI. I note that files with leafnames matching *.html, *.old, *.pdf, and doubtless many other extenders, are displayed by the GUI with a different icon. I like programming with Lua and I would like to have the *.lua extender display an appropriate ic...

Re: Please help a confirmed GUI addict. How do I ...

There is a matter in which I could do with advice. Since getting going with Raspbian I have installed various pieces of software - browsers, for example - and later changed my mind. If I installed them with sudo agt-get install I used sudo apt-get purge to remove them. But I still see a lot of cruft...

Re: Please help a confirmed GUI addict. How do I ...

@Paeryn. Many thanks for the information. I have now modified /home/pi/.config/openbox/lxde-pi-rc.xml by commenting out an <action name="raise"> tag and now I can drag one window behind another. Furthermore, because lxde-pi-rc.xml is so easy to read, I have been able to discover all sorts of useful ...

Re: Please help a confirmed GUI addict. How do I ...

@Paeryn. Thanks I found that Preferences -> Openbox Configuration Manager -> Mouse lets me separate focus from top-of-stack. Unfortunately it does not let me move a window without popping it back to the top. There appears to be no mechanism for dragging a window underneath another one, which corresp...

Cannot go back to Windows as I was never there in the first place. I have been a RISC OS user since forever. I grant you that Linux is marvellous. I am looking forward to learning more. I see that SciTE's Help -> SciTE Help option runs a command called xdg-open which looks a bit like Filer_Run in RI...

Please help a confirmed GUI addict. How do I ...

Entering commands by hand one risks typing errors. Better to select information from a menu and initiate actions with mouseclicks. That is surely why we have GUIs. Take entry of a file's pathname as a parameter; in RISC OS I hold down the SHIFT key and drag the file's icon into the command window or...

Re: How do I mend the Preferences menu in Pixel?

I have Stretch. The obsolescence of Pixel has passed me by. Does the Raspberry Pi desktop still have a name? I must say that I would appreciate some lessons about the inner workings of the GUI for Raspbian. I would be grateful for any pointers to useful information. Every Linux distribution seems to...

How do I mend the Preferences menu in Pixel?

The Desktop Preferences option seems to open exactly the same dialog as Appearance Settings. I fear something is wrong, but short of a complete reinstall of Raspbian I do not know how to restore the system. It seems to have gone wrong after I installed Vivaldi.

Duplicate receivers?

I have a Logitech K260/M210 wireless keyboard/mouse combination, which works fine on both my Raspberry Pis , one with Raspbian and the other with RISC OS. But I have to unplug the receiver and move it from one to the other. I bought a nano unifying receiver, thinking that if I could somehow clone th...

Re: Replace file manager by rox-filer. Possible?

Yes, and after I have done sudo apt-get install rox-filer what do I do next? I have successfully stretched Raspbian, and Pixel is now very handsome to look at. But I still do not know how to bind user-actions (clicks and drags) to commands. I note that if I go to Main Menu -> Preferences -> Desktop ...

Raspbian with PIXEL on Rpi3. If I select Desktop->Preferences from the Main (Start) menu I get the same result as if I had selected Preferences->Appearance Settings. So something is wrong. How do I correct it?

Is there a log file?

I have an Rpi3 with Raspbian, set to boot up into Pixel. When I switch on, all sorts of salad scrolls past up the screen until Pixel is started. Is there a log file somewhere that contains all that salad, as it scrolls past too fast to be read? The reason I ask is that recently boot up seems to be t...

Re: Raspberry Pi hardware compatibility layer?

I had in mind things like the SWP instruction, valid for the Rpi2's CPU , no longer being valid for the Rpi3's. I had not realized that the default installed gcc took care of that. Sorry for the noise.

Now that we have a multiplicity of Raspberry Pi versions, based on a multiplicity of ARM CPUs, would it not be convenient for users and programmers if the RPi organization promoted a standard ARM virtual machine and made distributable with each Raspberry Pi the Clang tools necessary for creating sof...

Sorry! I misunderstood what it referred to in
what is it doing in RISC OS?
.

Back in Autumn of 2004 I wrote an article Why Lua is not BASIC in Frobnicate#22. Maybe I should bring it up to date with a wimp program for the comparison?

Re: Readable Code Style, Review Requested.

What is it doing in RISC OS? Because it runs under RISC OS. That is why it is called RiscLua. You should try it.

How does this compare for readability? It does the same - puts an icon on the iconbar and quits when you click Select on it. This is in RiscLua. local task, QUIT in require "task" local window, ibar = require "window, require "ibar" local example = task "IbarExample" window.init (example) example:in...

Re: compton on the pi3, stock raspbian

Just to query your phrase about "adding" @compton to /home/pi/.config/lxsession/autostart :
My file has
@lxpanel --profile LXDE-pi
@pcmanfm --desktop --profile LXDE-pi
@xscreensaver -no-splash
@compton
Is this correct? Should the second line be there?

Re: compton on the pi3, stock raspbian

I am running Raspbian Jessie on an rpi3. I installed compton and followed all your instructions - except in /home/pi/.config/compton.conf I had shadow-exclude = [ "!name~=''" ] but no shadows or transparency effects are visible. I must have a syntactic error somewhere in the compton.conf file. Any h...
