I'm guessing the VL805 firmware update that is about to get deployed to everyone is 000137ab?
I think so, I've been running 000137ab since it was released for manual update around August. Using USB 3 regularly (storage)

Re: Which Pi for a beginner?

I would always start on the best you can afford, then work down to lower specced models if you have the need for something less powerful. Agreed! I have a RPi4B 4GB and use it as a lightweight desktop and media player. If I have a specific project I use a model that suits the project, but as a begi...

Re: Pi 4 won't boot without HDMI plugged in

If this is not done would remote VNC have no Desktop too? VNC seems to work; I also have this set to force a video setting (/boot/config.txt) # uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force 1080p) hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=82 See: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/conf...

Re: The Rust debate.

Honeywell mainframe by any chance? I used B on one of those (yes 36 bit "words" only). C promotes smaller types to "int" before arithmetic. Int is whatever size is naturally best for the machine. I presume the original development PDP had type int as 16 bits, nowadays its normally 32-bits. No, it w...

For anything < RPi4B 100% agree.
If you need 64bit then maybe other options; but (eventually) there will be 64bit Raspbian

Re: RPI4: Why is everything still 32-bit?

64 bit is coming. Meanwhile, 32 bit works for the vast majority of users. Like, 99.99999% of them. And the incremental approach is probably best; i.e. kernel first etc as you are doing. - Thanks!! I only have one application that really benefits from 64 bit, that is stockfish (chess engine). For th...

I have no issues with Onedrive via browser on my RPi4B / 4GB - latest firmware, kernel, and software (chromium).

256 MB for Graphics.

Also, playing videos works fine 1080p (youtube, and downloads via VLC).

Sounds like screen time out, just install the screen saver and then set longer blank times or disable it.

Re: Why moving to 64bit?

Besides the obvious address space, 64bit chips also (usually) have the following benefits:
  • Wider data paths and bigger better caches
  • More registers thus faster running programs
  • Better special instructions (SSE MMX etc.)
RPi5C+ (wishing) will have at least 16GB support and 64bit Raspian

GPU Memory setting on RPi4b - why 256MB is best?

I read the threads below, suggesting not more than 256MB is needed for GPU memory. FYI I have a 4GB RPi4b, no camera (yet), using a 4K HDMI display (using as a mini media centre) Can someone explain how the GPU uses memory (or a reference) and why the 256MB is all that is needed (looking for a more ...
