Re: [Guide] Kodi on Raspbian Buster

I wanted to document a problem I've run into. I kind of assumed when I bought the Pi 4 that the reason VC-1 hardware decoding was dropped was that the new processor was powerful enough to handle 1080p VC-1 video. (At least, you'd hope it was tested before hardware support was dropped.) Buttttt that'...

Re: [Guide] Kodi on Raspbian Buster

Yeah, like I thought, looks like sometimes Kodi does not have permission to the DRM subsystem, don't know exactly why, and Kodi starts with software MESA (llvmpipe) instead of V3D acelerated driver. To fix it create a new udev rule, like for example /etc/udev/rules.d/99-kodi.rules with the followin...

Re: [Guide] Kodi on Raspbian Stretch [Recover]

Yes, I will try to do it this weekend. Then I will make an update here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=250796 You have news?. Kodi 18.4 for Raspbian Buster is now available in the PiPplware repo. Just received my Pi 4 today, will now take a look on it and how to package it....

Re: [UPDATE] Kodi 18.4 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

Found relevant systemd commit: udev-rules: Permission changes for /dev/dri/renderD* Interestingly, this commit says: "Change default mode to 0666" . Which means any user should be able to access it. :( I am guessing Debian folks are to blame here. Maybe they had a reason for doing it that way, or i...

Re: [UPDATE] Kodi 18.4 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

Maybe the following rule? SUBSYSTEM=="drm", GROUP="video", MODE="0660" Well, this rule tells udev for any device in the "drm" subsystem to set their group to :video , which essentially is the first thing I proposed. :) Ugh, this is why I never mess with udev. Yeah, I'm going to guess people should ...

Re: [UPDATE] Kodi 18.4 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

I just confirmed this to be the problem. @bscphil and @psyke83 you guys are geniuses for find this out. Basically, here is what happens. When I originally compiled Kodi, I was able to launch it from a terminal and it worked great. But when I tried using chvt or even wrote my own proggy to switch te...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

Once or twice when I have started Kodi, it works correctly, with high performance and little CPU use. Every other time, it uses ~50% of one core when idling, and (more importantly) interacting with the UI (via a remote) spikes the CPU briefly to 100% on all cores, resulting in a very slow interface...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

My fellow Kodified Raspinauts of the 4th Dimension, I bring to you Debian package for Kodi 18.4 Leia: Thanks, I appreciate the work. Idle CPU is down from 50% to 30%. Unfortunately the interface is still just as slow as before: when using the remote, the CPU briefly spikes to 100% on all cores and ...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

I did a Debug build for... well, debugging I guess... :D I anticipated to run into problems and figured it might be useful. It turned out not to be. So, I will go ahead and do a Release build for 18.4. In terms of the build process, I would have to disappoint -- I am not a big fan of Docker. :? I'v...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

I will try to get to it in a few days. Feel free to bug me, if I go silent for too long. :D The kodi-rpi4_18.3-5_armhf.deb in the original post seems to be a 'Debug' build. Would you please do a 'Release' build for this upcoming 18.4? Actually I'd like to (cross-) compile and build myself. Can you ...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

Kodi in raspbian.raspberrypi.org is just a build of the Debian package, so it will run on any decent armhf platform, albeit poorly. Kodi in archive.raspberrypi.org for stretch was kindly provided by Rascas, who runs https://pipplware.pplware.pt/. It's just copied from his repo. We're holding off on...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

Something I don't understand: who exactly maintains packages for the Raspbian repositories? I think most of the packages are just taken from Debian's armhf builds, right? But some of them need to be compiled with RPi specific libraries, e.g. Kodi. The Kodi build in Raspbian stretch certainly isn't f...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

My understanding was that with the Pi 4, you should never see the thermometer icon because the Pi would actively manage the CPU frequency to keep the temperature out of the danger zone. If that's wrong, I suppose I wasn't seeing thermal throttling? That is wrong. No throttling will occur below 80'C...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

Some have mentioned that using a script to switch from an X server to a vterm before running Kodi makes it slow. However, I'm using this package on a minimal Raspbian installation with no GUI, and I'm still experiencing extreme slowness and laggy inputs in anything involving the Kodi GUI. Once a vi...

Re: Kodi 18.3 Leia for Raspberry Pi 4

Kodi use 30-50% idle for one CPU core on main window GUI. While playing video it is okay = no extra % on top of the normal video playback load. I tried with different skins and Estuary has little bit lower CPU ~30% with added <smartredraw>true< to advancedsettings.xml CPU lowers to 4-19% but this s...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

May I ask whether RPI supports things such as 10 bit video decoding, Dolby Vision and Atmos? Thx. HEVC hardware decode supports 4kp60, 10-bit. Audio output is pretty much unchanged, but the HDMI audio channels now support 8x192kHz bitrates. Thank you for confirming this! I agree with what someone e...
