SPI is Serial Peripheral Interface. No use for what you are trying to do. In my project I need to use the I2S as input/ouput sound card @192kHz when the Raspy (CM3+ on custom board) receive MCLK and BLCK and DIN from my board, then Raspy is the i2s slave. I've tried Ubuntu but doesn't start (seems to be an experimental version for Pi3); Gentoo is too big (16gb image) but I've only a CM3+ with onboard 8gb...
