Re: Claim for an Ubuntu sub-forum

The RPF have no reason to add anything about ubuntu. As James has pointed out, Canocial have load of money, they should setup their own. Besides, ubuntu is (kind of) dead. Lubuntu went down, Xubuntu went down, I don't know many people who actually use ubuntu snappy core, or ubuntu server. The only ...

Re: GNOME DE on Rpi 4 -- Can't do it

Hey there! Just noticed this post... Not sure what you are expeiriencing here. I usually use: sudo apt install gnome And I have been running gnome quite recently, so you don't need to doubt whther it actually works. I'm not an expert on linux, so I haven't done anything too technical... Anyway, try ...

Re: Installing and using KDE Plasma

Hey, there! In order to use kde plasma on a Raspberry Pi, you either: 1) Use fedora 30 kde plasma spin 2)Install kde plasma on Raspbian lite. Raspbian full doesn't support sessions, so use something else. Also, when using kde plasma with Raspbian lite, be sure to switch off OpenGL in raspi-config (A...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

For those who want to know, gnome3 is working on my Pi4, as well as cinnamon. I haven't been able to try the proper graphical performance, as my Pi4 currently has to overscan at the moment. They are both "usable". I've been able to steam link using KDE Plasma, Gnome, and cinnamon. Edit: Just realise...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

To continue with the theme of the thread - I've continued to use Raspberry Pi 4 almost exclusively after work and during weekend (even my wife noticed I stopped taking my MBP any more). All along the lines 'eat your own dog food'... Most of the usage is along everyday tasks as email/web (including ...

Re: [GUIDE] Raspbian Lite with RPD/LXDE/XFCE/MATE/i3/Openbox/X11 GUI

I don't get it. Really don't get it. What really gets me, is that people say something like 'x86 computers are faster than Rpi's.' I don't know what I am doing different, but I own a HP mini 110, and an Acer Aspire One ZG5, and both of them are no match to a Rpi3B+, let alone an Rpi4B. I'm not doing...

Re: [GUIDE] Raspbian Lite with RPD/LXDE/XFCE/MATE/i3/Openbox/X11 GUI

Its a teeny tiny little SBC that costs under $60 USD, with a processor that is significantly outgunned by most current middle to top tier smartphones.. It is never going to run the super heavy GUI environments that are built with higher end X86 laptops/desktops as targets. Its target audience and t...

Re: Q&A topic for heavy desktop enviroments

I would add Mate to the list. Lighter than Gnome or KDE but richer set of options than LXDE. I find it easier to tweak to what I want. Runs very well on the Pi 3B+ and 4B. Ubuntu Mate runs well on the 3B+. It is not available for the 4B yet. Raspbian Lite (Buster) + Mate installs cleanly and works ...

STICKY: Q&A topic for heavy desktop enviroments

This topic is for Pi users who are not currently happy with the look of the Raspberry Pi Desktop desktop, and are looking for nicer alternatives. The ones I personally know of are: *Gnome *KDE Plasma 5 *Cinnamon *MATE Please comment if you think there are others. The ones that I know currently work ...

for me on raspberry pi 4 using gnome 3 is very laggy to use alongside with chromium, all css animations are a lot slower than when was on lxde, , besides that, my mouse seems slower than normal, videos on youtube even on 720p are slower than normal (dropping a lot of frames) and all the gnome3 anim...

Re: [GUIDE] Raspbian Lite with RPD/LXDE/XFCE/MATE/i3/Openbox/X11 GUI

Okay, with the release of buster, I had a few mixed emotions, with the desktops I could install. Negative: *KDE Plasma no longer works on Pi 4 or 3+ Positives: *We have Gnome3 *We have Cinnamon So not all bad. With the two desktop enviroments that do work, It's best to use OpenGL, because without it...

Re: Don't want Raspian Buster!

Question, can anyone explain why KDE plasma works okay with OpenGL on stretch, but not buster? Thanks! What error messages do you see when trying to run KDE plasma? No errors, just Kwin won't startup for a while. Also, the system settings in KDE Plasma crash every time I come out of certain setting...

Hey! I had problems with KDE plasma on my 3B+, but I've got it running really well. Here is my setup: I use stretch instead of buster, as I found buster didn't work so good. I'm not quite sure why. I also enable the OpenGL driver with full KMS in the raspi-config I then install the kde plasma deskto...

The machine is an average laptop that'sactually a family shared laptop. Balena provide AppleImages, so I just needed to unzip, and then run the app. I did have my own laptop, but I tried Balena etcher on there, and it just crashed. That's probably because the my laptop is very very slow. Anyway, I t...
