Maybe try recompiling and installing again. I didn't have any issues when I modified the C code to add a default value. I'm assuming it just over writes the existing program. Remember to make sure the permissions are set right.

ERROR: '/sys/class/backlight/rpi_backlight/bl_power' does not exist/insufficient permissions. if there anything else I could try ?
