Yes -- an access point is the solution. In addition I've located this

which shows how to have the access point enabled when no router connection is found. Works great

Thanks for the response. Looks like I was not clear enough in my original post. I assume there will not be any connection to a distant router. I want the RPi to offer an IP that I can use to connect using SSH. The connection isdirec b/w an SSHclient on my iPad and and the RPi. So distance is not a p...
