There are third party tools that can do this (atomic A/B system updates).

Thanks for the feedback on Mender, I work on the project. The demo server is indeed not optimized for performance. But with Mender 1.7 the virtual device is using native x86 emulation, so it is much faster (update deployment time went from 3 -> 1 minute). If you want to invest time in the production...

I work on the Mender open source project, and happy to let you know that we just released support for Raspbian: https://hub.mender.io/t/raspberry-pi-3- ... b-raspbian

Following this guide should be much easier than trying to modify the boot logic yourself. Hope this helps!

You can also use a dedicated OTA updates tool for this for more safety (rollback support) and control (grouping, deployment logs etc).
