Well that was a chore

After setting up my Pi4 as an NFS/PiHole server to replace a 3B+ which was doing the job, and serving the OSs for the other PIs via NFS, and realising my 500GB external drive was getting close to capacity, I decided to migrate everything to a 1TB (this was last week). My lesson from all this was don...

Re: OMG - I can't believe I did this

I did, unfortunately. However, some of the most precious may be on my phone, or other people's phone. I've lost 40 years of memories, but I may be able to get back the most important by contacting the right people, checking my social media posts, going back to old digital cameras and see what surviv...

OMG - I can't believe I did this

I have literally trashed all my media and my PI NFS boots. So long version, I was upgrading to a 1TB drive from a 500Gb, since space was getting low. rsync is the better option, but I decided to clean the drive first. I cleaned twice, and have cleared both copies. All videos (replaceable), music (mu...

PiHut and ModMyPi

So, seems like The Pihut have now acquired ModMyPi are now one and the same. Can't complain, both good companies, and one less place to look for stuff.

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

Honestly, are people too dumb to do this. Boot an SDcard mounted as /boot, and handover rootfs to whatever the hell you want. It isn't rocket science, it doesn't strain your SDCard, and it will boot with any connected USB drive up to terrabytes. Simply because it won't boot directly from USB doesn't...

Re: OKdo - Anyone else not received delivery yet?

I can't complain. Ordered premium Thursday afternoon, and arrived midday Friday. Hi Roken, Do you know who the courier company was that delivered it to you and did you get a tracking number? Unfortunately not. I ordered for delivery at work, and it was received by reception. I'll ask tomorrow if th...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

I can say with no doubt, /boot on MicroSD and handover to /root on USB works just fine. Not a complete USB boot, but as close as damn it.

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

To all those asking if it will fit in a 3B case, yet it will with, as has been mentioned, the side removed and some minor modification.

Should you do it? Not without a cooling solution. Honestly, I was hitting 80C+ in a modified case compared with 63C open to the air.

Just saying.

Keep in mind the Pi 4 can't boot from USB *yet*.
It depends on your definition of "boot". You can have /boot on a MicroSD and handover /root to an external drive, as has always been possible.

Re: Tvheadend for Raspbian Buster?

Useful thread. I'm going to repurpose one of my 3B+, and set up the 4 to carry out the server functions. At least I know now that one of the opther Pis will have to serve tvheadend for me.

Moving install

I have several 3B+ (I think there's a 3B in there, too), and have just purchased a 4B 4GB model. the 4G will take over as my NFS server, PiHole and, probably, my Plex server. The current NFS Pi boots from an SSD, and the others from directories on that NFS. However, swapping the drive to the Pi4 han...

Re: How would I only boot into one program and not a full blown OS

The xserver is what provides for a graphical interface, and gives you the desktop. You can't have one without the other.

However, you can have a minimal xserver which will load a single graphical program.

Or, the traditional xorg way. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in the Monitor section, add

Code: Select all

Option	"DPMS" "off"

Re: I accidentally unplugged my power adapter while it was installing the latest updates

You could plug the sdcard into a PC, chroot into the SDCard and perform a:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a
followed by

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sude apt-get upgrade
Once finished, it may rescue without re-installing.

It'd be helpful to have an example or two of non-working sites.

Nevertheless, have you tried whitelisting them in PiHole?

Why I love my PIs

Small
Retro gaming
Nextcloud - giving access to my files from anywhere
Plex, giving access to my media anywhere
PiHole, for ad blocking
VPN, for security
tvheadend - for live TV anywhere (via Kodi)

I could go on. Why do you love your PI(s)?

Re: Pi, amplifier and speakers

If you have one Pi physically connected to the speakers, you can use pulseaudio to have all Pis output to those speakers, connecting to the pulseaudio server on the physically connected Pi. I should qualify: On the client machines (i.e. those not physically connected), modify /etc/pulse/client.conf ...
