Re: Custom launcher on Panel or Menu?

Thanks BullittBourbon, I have sort of thrown in the towel on Raspbian. I had built a nice gateway, router, firewall, VPN sharing box from a Pi Zero. I had migrated down from an Intel box with CentOS 7 to a Pi 3B with Ubuntu to the Zero. It carried the load, however, Raspbian kept changing the names ...

I went back to 16.04. It does not provide for on-the-fly changing of display settings either.

Re: Rotate monitor image on 3B+ Ubuntu Mate 18.04?

Thanks aBUGSworstnightmare,

I was just trying to change it on the fly. I can do that with nVidia and Intel graphics drivers. I had never tried on a Pi. I will give your approach a try although I will probably leave the monitor in landscape most of the time.

Rotate monitor image on 3B+ Ubuntu Mate 18.04?

I just hooked up a new (to me) refurbished Dell 1280 x 1024 monitor to a 3B+. $33 US delivered! As the monitor can pivot so as to present a Portrait layout 1024 x 1280 I decided to give it a try. I found that the monitor configuration under System; Preferences; Hardware; Display said the monitor was...

Re: mate-panel is eating my Pi (at least the memory and swap)

mate-panel --replace does not seem to be a viable answer. I ran it for a couple of hours and all appeared OK. Until I touched a window on the remote desktop. Then all sorts of mess let loose. Flashing panels, windows etc. I had to ssh to the machine and kill the vncserver session and start over. I a...

Re: mate-panel is eating my Pi (at least the memory and swap)

Thanks rpdom, There is a mate-panel --reset. However, that removed all the customization I had done to the top panel :( I see there is also a --replace option. That does not seem to disrupt any settings. I guess I might put that in my script instead of killall. I wish the Pi had 4 GB  Ken p...

mate-panel is eating my Pi (at least the memory and swap)

I have a Pi 3B+ running Ubuntu Mate 18.04 (originally upgraded from 16.04 and now the official image - same issue) which is run headless as a Bit Torrent client. Briefly it is configured thus: On-board NIC manually set to an IP address on my LAN, firewalled to prevent Internet traffic - only ssh and...

x0vncserver issue

I am setting up a Pi 3B+ with Ubuntu Mate 18.04 with the goal of remote access using x0vncserver (from the vnc4server package) to allow connecting to a Mate desktop on the Pi rather than a virtual desktop. I have done the latter but it is not meeting my needs for this project. So far I have: install...

Re: Vdeo issue - beats all I have ever seen

Thanks W. H. Heydt, The last VGA monitor I purchased was in 2011. It was an Acer 19" wide screen. It is still working fine on the wife's PC. The monitor on my test bench is a Samsung 17" which I purchased in 2007. Still works great. My other VGA monitor is a 15" Star Tech which I purchased in 2006. ...

Vdeo issue - beats all I have ever seen

I have several Pi 3B and 3B+ computers. I have one monitor with a DVI connector and a HDMI to DVI cable does the job. I have also used HDMI to VGA converters to connect to a couple of older VGA monitors. All work fine using Ubuntu and Raspbian. Yesterday I came across the CentOS 7 with KDE image. I ...

paswordless sudo in Raspbian

The Raspbian documentation https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/usage/users.md explains how to add a user, make the user a sudoer and optionally to grant them passwordless sudo access. This is consistent with other Linux distros with which I am familiar. My question is... How/why does the...

Re: Raspbian Mate anyone?

I will give the instructions on the linked page a try. Weezy is rather out of date. The current version of Raspbian, based on Stretch, uses systemd to control startup. startx no longer works. The command is systemctl isolate graphical.target.

Re: Raspbian Mate anyone?

The trick is to start with the raspbian-lite image - with NO gui. I have tried installing Mate over top of Raspbian with the LXDE desktop but there does not seem to be any way to select the desired environment. I believe this has to do with the window manager and I am not familiar with how to do tha...

Raspbian Mate anyone?

I am running Ubuntu Mate 18.04 on a Pi 3b and 4 Pi 3B+ computers. I started with UM 16.04 on the 3B and by a combination of trickery enabled the image to boot a 3B+ and performed a do-release-upgrade to get to 18.04. This has been working well except that man pages are broken on 18.04 :( I have trie...

Re: Bluetooth range on a Pi

Thanks Douglas11, This all sounded nice in theory but the Pi Zero-W is proving somewhat troublesome as I described in this thread on the Troubleshooting forum https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=233247 At the moment I am experimenting with the Zero-W and WiFI. I had a heck of a t...

Sound through Bluetooth on Pi Zero-W

I just opened the package on a Zero-W, installed Raspbian, updated and am up and running. I have a Bluetooth "receiver" which I have hooked to a small set of non-powered speakers. From the panel I set Bluetooth to be discoverable, selected Add device, searched for devices, found my receiver, selecte...

Re: Bluetooth range on a Pi

Thanks W. H. Heydt, The speaker I was looking at last evening was rated ad 10 watts per channel - 20 total. That would be nominally 4 amps at 5 volts. It did have an internal battery which the USB would over time charge. Still, I would rather the speakers be charged independently from the Pi. And fo...

I tried these images from https://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Raspberry_Pi3 Leap 42.3 XFCE - would not boot - just the multicolor screen ...

Re: VNC on Ubuntu Mate on Pi 3B+

Thanks fruitoftheloom, A couple of reasons I do not run Raspbian... While it is based on Debian, the desktop environment is LXDE which (I am tempted to say something rude) is somewhat cumbersome. If I place a launcher on the panel it pushes the right most icon off the screen. To correct that I have ...
