Re: Is NOOBS better than Stretch?

Thanks guys, hmm seems Stretch is the way to go then. I'm suprised with the lack of tuts on youtube. Yes it is a poor rambling post impossible to diagnose. I'll open one in troubleshooting now & hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks again for all your input.

Is NOOBS better than Stretch?

Hi guys, a couple of years ago I first set-up my raspberry pi with raspbian; I think it was jessie at that time. I've tried 3 times installing the new raspbian (stretch) & I'm having a nightmare with apt-get. It's malfunctioning by timing out & not completing updates/ upgrades. I tried changing the ...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Ok, thanks guys, sorry for my ignorance Tim, I thought it might be possible to refresh a dynamic ip regularly and using dns pointers to point back to the dynamic ip address. I've read an article on how to do this. However the problem seems to be that the recipient's reverse lookup's nowadays is seei...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

OH! So what email server software did you use before postfix? Sendmail? No Tim, as I'm sure you've grasped already I'm a complete noob, I have a Microsoft Exchange Server (didn't configure just part of my server package). Enjoying learning all this, but there's quite a lot to it and it's consuming ...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Do you a fixed external IP ? Your domain records need to be pointed at a fixed IP. If you have been given a dynamic IP by your ISP, then this is never going to work. You can relay your domains outgoing email through your ISP's mail servers, but how do you get any replies ? Your domains MX record wi...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim please see my responses in red. What do you mean "...as my ip was fine at first"? My ip was not blacklisted until trying to send emails from postfix Many emai...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, there's something up because this has only happened since playing around with postfix. I really think it's from sending an email and the recipient client doing a reverse lookup as I've watched countless tutorials and a way of filetering spam was to reverse look up and see if the email be...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

My plan is to do that if I could get my own raspberry pi server up and running, and to do this when I move house which is likely to be in a few months. However I think that I'm only going to get blacklisted again as I think the problem is that it's doing a reverse lookup and my domain ip address is ...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, I've been doing a lot of research on why this is happening. I've followed the tutorials exactly and am really suprised to see that nobody else has experienced these errors. I've tried relaying previously but had no luck. I think this is more complicated than it's made out and I'm really ...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, yes I just don't see how that can be. I'm sending emails from an email from that IP on another address; as it's shared hosting they must all be coming from that ip address as I have another website with them.

Thanks for your input Tim, I've still got more work to do it seems.

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, I was reluctant to post this on the internet but so stuck on this. It's showing as the ip address is blacklisted but this is nonsense. My other email from this ip is fine, if it was blacklisted I wouldn't be able to send from there. Sep 13 17:43:53 raspberrypi postfix/qmgr[11914]: 706C03...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, yes I understand what's going on now. I'd imagine almost every single professional web host will be using multiple hosting these days. The problem has to be: When sending an email my ip address for rcestimating.co.uk is currently showing as the external professional web hosting service h...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, I've been reading up and watching dns record tutorials. Don't understand why I'm getting a nslookup on my external website. Name: rcestimating.co.uk Address: 91.198.165.243 Now when entering http://91.198.165.243/ in a browser address i get a sorry webpage; surely this ip address should ...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, no my ip address is not blacklisted it seems, but" 1 - it doesn't make sense why nslookup doesn't show my domain; 2 - The problem is definitely like you said the domain is already out there being hosted, is it just an mx record that needs to point to the raspberry pi server; as mentioned...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Ok I think I'm getting a more of an understanding and I think I may have made a bit of a bad move by testing this out on my next business as my research indicates that if you register an existing website which is hosted on a dynamic ip address then it can be blacklisted straight away before you even...

Re: Creating NEW Root user

My understanding is that there's nothing higher than root. Sudo permission is given in the /etc/sudoers file, if you was to open that file (under sudo permissions of course) using: [ sudo pico /etc/sudoers # Allow members of group sudo to execute any command %sudo ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL pi ALL=(ALL) NOPA...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks for your rapid responses Tim, and your time. After installing dnsutils I ran nslookup mydomain.co.uk and it returned 'Non authoritative answer': ip address 91.198.165.243; at the very bottom. If I type this in a browser I don't get anything of any value; was expecting to be directed towards t...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks Tim, I am using a dynamic ip address, I had tried setting relayhost = to my ISPs smtp server in my etc/postfix/main.cf, and restarted postfix but that didn't change anything. You're correct; the problem is the receiving email server can't resolve the address for that domain, I'm going to the ...

Re: Can't send an email from this tutorial!

Thanks SurferTim, I was quite suprised to see that I'm getting a bounce. Telnet shows the status of the outgoing email as queued. My IP address seems to be blacklisted; which is quite suprising. However being on a dynamic ip address I can't see this being the problem, would it not be more likely tha...
