What you could do on your Veroboard is install a fuse on each output.
Or, perhaps, split the cable that goes to both Pi and HDD so that the 5v wire doesn't reach the Pi's socket.
Thank you, that is good advice. I will add a fuse for each output, and also disconnect the 5V rail 8-)

Re: Powering Pi3 and HDD

I have been trying to use a 2.5" HDD to boot the Pi from, but I was experiencing the following problem: RPi3: USB HDD fail to boot #842.

That is why I want to use the MeanWell PSU and the y-cable :)

Re: Powering Pi3 and HDD

Thank you, everyone. Will the power delivered from the MeanWell PSU via the "y-cable" to the USB Type A socket on the Pi not be back feeding the Pi? Is this not dangerous, since the Pi is also powered from the same PSU via the micro USB? :?

Powering Pi3 and HDD

Hello everyone I need some advice. I want to power a Raspberry Pi3 and a SATA 2.5" HDD from a MeanWell NES-75-5 . My idea is to build a simple "breakout" board on vero board to take the output of the PSU and split it between 4 x USB type A connectors, and then power the Pi from one of these sockets....

Re: PINN - An enhanced version of NOOBS.

If you have a Pi3, you can install PINN to a USB Mass Storage Device and install any supported OS to the USB drive such that it will boot from the USB drive without an SD card. (You need to configure the Pi3 to support USB booting) I can't seem to get this to work. My RPi 3 is already configured to...

Re: RPi3B: USB flash/Micro SD speed tests

Surely that stick is duff or something? It did 21k/sec but all the others did megabytes/sec. Even the discrepancy between USB1's speed and USB2 isn't that bad, 11Mbps (IIRC) and 480Mbps. That's what I also thought, so I tested it with H2testw v1.4 : Test finished without errors. You can now delete ...

Re: [RPi3B] Move existing installation from MicroSD to USB s

Thank you DirkS , now it is working 8-) I did the following with the USB stick inserted: sudo nano /media/pi/boot/cmdline.txt Here I had to change root= to point to the root partition on the USB stick ( /dev/sda7 in my case) Next: sudo nano /media/pi/root/etc/fstab Here I had to change the entries f...

[RPi3B] Move existing installation from MicroSD to USB stick

Hello everyone, I have 2017-06-21-raspbian-jessie installed on a 16GB MicroSD card and I installed some additional software. I now want to move my existing installation from the MicroSD card to a USB stick. I already set the bit in the OTP to enable booting from a USB mass storage device. I tested t...
