Re: Consolidated table of content of all issues of TheMagPi

Being new to Raspberry Pi and the Raspbian/Linux programming language I have a question on this link to the consolidated table of content (TOC). The link takes me to the Microsoft One Drive LIVE site and then automatically downloads a file named "MagPi.7z." Unfortunately nothing on my computer will...

Re: Raspberry pi laptop conversion

If you are *not* going to build a "laptop pi" with the old laptop and are just reusing the old screen, $30 for the interface is about what buying a used hdmi monitor that is bigger on Craigslist costs. True you could buy a used monitor for about the same money as buying the driver board for a lapto...

Re: Pi 3: Does Package DL Include BIOS?

None of the package downloads will include the BIOS files nor any of the game ROM's as they are proprietary/copyrighted to the original systems. If you own any of the systems you're wanting to emulate then there are ways, depending on the copyright/fair use laws where you live , to create/copy the B...

Re: Raspberry pi laptop conversion

AFAIK nobody has ever succeeded in re-using an old laptop LCD, as all the "steering electronics" needed to get a picture out of it are all integrated on the motherboard of the PC as part of the chipset, and they normally do NOT use the same technology in a laptop as a bare LCD panel would, for whic...

Re: Raspberry pi laptop conversion

Not sure what is wrong with the laptop. My dad has a couple of broken ones in his closet that I was planning on cannabalizing. I am pretty sure that the screens work fine. So if nothing else I can find a driver board for one of them. I'm sure that I can't be the first person to want to hook up a la...

Re: Raspberry pi laptop conversion

Over this summer I want to try a bit of an ambitious project. Basically, I want to take a gutted laptop (basically only the screen and keyboard left) and hook up my pi to it. I was wondering if anyone had experience on what sort of daughterboards or usb connectors I would need to control a laptop s...

Re: Struggling beginner

Here is the wiki on where to place BIOS files in RetroPie. https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/BIOS

The wiki covers RetroPie 3.0 but the locations should be the same for the current release as well. Hope this helps. :)

Re: difference between RetroPie, and Raspbian/NOOBS?

Something else you can try if you want to dual boot Kodi and RetroPie is to use a preconfigured dual boot image like the one found here: http://www.multibootpi.com/builds/retropie-v4-0-2-osmc-2016-07-1-dual-boot/#more-202 After booting up, you'll want to update both Kodi and RetroPie to get the late...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

As my dear great grandfather would say - Usus est verior, quam Books. I hope I got the conjugation right, Opa has been gone for awhile now so my Latin is a bit rusty. For any future questions or responses I may have I will be sure to be technically precise in the wording so as not to have this again...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

So sorry if my American English seems simple enough to laugh at. Also excuse me for trying to share information in a simple way, from now on I will be sure to respond in a more scientific classroom style. :ugeek: I only have a master's in electronic engineering so I may have to research my answers a...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

How are you going to get 12V to drive that sort of Amperage through the fairly high resistance of a human body? It's not as uncommon as one would think. Take a typical car battery: 12v DC @ 700 - 800 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). If you short the battery and are not properly grounded (i.e. wearing rubb...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

... 120v @ 100amps is just as deadly as 240v @ 100amps, its not the voltage that kills - its the amperage. A 12v DC @ 50amps can kill if handled improperly. ... Wrong 240v @ 30mA can kill. 120v @ 30mA can kill. Source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Residual-current_device 12v has a hard job getting ...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

I agree that it is not a beginners project, more intermediate to advanced, but if done correctly there is no "inherent risk" . Which is also why I suggested getting an electronics store or a friend who knows about electricity to do the work if the poster isn't 100% sure on how to do it. Your also co...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

You're wrong. 230V CAN KILL 1st - No need for shouting. 2nd - Yes 230v can kill. 12v with enough amperage can also kill so I don't get what your point is. My solution does not by-pass anything to make it unsafe. If you look into a power strip you see the same setup, each socket is daisy-chained. Th...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

Was hoping for a solution more straightforward, I find it hard to believe that no-one has had a similar issue before. Correct answer, because the suggestion from SilverDragonSys could a) burn out his Pi, b) burn down his house or c) kill someone or something when it goes wrong. Mucking about with 1...

Re: Picture frame/media centre - one power source?

I'm doing something similar so my trick will probably work for you. I took an old PC power cord and cut the female connector off, then I soldered 2 wires to each of the power leads and one wire to the grounding wire. I removed the boards from both the Pi psu and the old laptop psu, de-soldered the ...

Re: Issue w/ Reys Setup--Systems Config File Has Not Been Se

When you say you recently loaded a new image onto your microSD card, how exactly did you load the new image? If you simply loaded it over the old image then there are, more than likely, some configuration conflicts. When loading a new image it is always best to quick format the card to FAT32 first a...

Re: HELP - only 13 games downloaded with retropie

If you own any of the Pokemon games you can create a backup of the cartridge(s), commonly called a ROM, and then place the resulting ROM in the appropriate RetroPie folder (i.e. Pokemon Gameboy in the roms/gb folder, Pokemon Gameboy Advanced in the rom/gba folder, etc). Once you have placed the roms...
