Re: How broken is the WWW?

And how are you going to fund it?
I pay an internet supplier - that should be sufficient. 8-)

(Just like I pay the post office to deliver letters - & that's what they do.)

I'm going to wait a bit, hopefully soon they will release an updated Buster with all the fixes in it, else they will continue to have people with problems posting here. 8-)

(Be aware, some of the rpi-update followers had to re install.)

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

Perhaps expectations are higher than they used to be? Noobies won't remember how USB boot came to be in the first place. Yeah, expectations were high, we had been led to believe it would be better, no, much better than the RPi3B/3B+ - & it is - as a board, but it was the lack of software testing th...

Re: Pi 4 + netbook or just get a pi-top?

no, installing *nix does NOT make netbooks faster
Have you tried them running from ram, speeds them up no end - take a look at SliTaz & Tiny Core - small fast distros - they should bring them back to life - or at least sell them off, or give them away. 8-)

Re: I can´t boot from usb in pi 4

Booting from USB is not a requirement of a desktop system. Neither is rotating rust or SSD storage. (lol or otherwise) For my money I'd much rather see the lack of boot via GPIO 3 toggle fixed, though again that might be a minor use case so I'm not holding my breath. To be honest, I've never seen a...

Also when I researched small SSDs I found the small 32GB ones are now quite cheap at around £20.
You should find lots of 120GB SSD for less than £20. 8-)

Re: Installation failure on Acer Aspire 5516 laptop

You need 'nonfree' software that isn't included on genuine Debian install media.

What you have to do is download the drivers to a pendrive & insert it when you are asked for it.

Re: Is starting with a 3B+ a bad idea now that the 4b is out?

I've NEVER used USB boot, and prior to the Pi3B+, neither did anyone else. Just use a SD card to hand off booting to the USB drive. Not complicated. Not complicated, but frustrating when you have been USB booting since USB2.0 arrived on the scene, & just because YOU don't use it does not mean it is...

Re: Starting up

Using the official PSU & mHDMI cable, I managed to get mine working by adding the following to config.txt, (it may work for you).

hdmi_force_hotplug:0=1
hdmi_group=2 ## for HDMI
hdmi_mode=39 ## for 1360x768

The mHDMI cable needs to be in the socket next to the power socket.

Re: Is starting with a 3B+ a bad idea now that the 4b is out?

I've bought a RPi4B/4GB, it is a bit of a pain, as the most used feature, for me, is USB booting, but it is low on their priority for sorting out - & they are advertising this as a desktop computer. :roll: It will all get sorted out........eventually - as the micro HDMI port support is being sorted ...

bashrc - failed, the program starts every time I create a new shell, which I don't want

Is there any simple method to start a program once after autologin, as an user pi (without creating a complex shell script) ?
Maybe by putting it into .profile(?).

Could be your USB to SATA adapter, not many really work that well.
I had to use boot_delay_ms=9000 in config.txt to even get mine to boot.

is what the desktop preferences describe as Desktop 1 and Desktop 2 not different workspaces?
These refer to the HDMI ports for two monitors.
