Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

They released early so that manufacturers could get a head start, & that's likely the reason the 4GB version was in short supply. (A certain manufacturer of thin clients had a supply). This RPi4 version wasn't really due to be released until 2020, & I'm guessing that is why so much of the software d...

Re: Raspberry pi 3b+ Usb booting not working!!!

Make sure you got a good download.

I've run a version of picore on my RPi3B OK, so it should work, they know what they're doing - mine will boot from a pendrive, (as I've set the OTP bit).

Edit: I've owned a Sandisk Cruser before, some machines just don't like them, maybe try a different make.

Re: Pi 3 A +. What is it for?

I knew the limitations of a 1GB ram Linux machine well in advance of getting my RPi3A+, (I had several old computers with just that amount of ram), I got it to see just what it could do. It can browse the web, if you're not in a hurry, but is more useful as a command line Linux machine - a mus...

I am running AntiX on my modded Toshiba Chromebook, previously had MX Linux on it, so you can likely put any distro onto any Intel based Chromebook. 8-)

Re: Current State of Raspberry Pi 4 Software and Hardware Support

EDID & USB boot work on the RPi3B/3B+/3A+ so why not on the RPi4B. 8-)
(OK you still haven't got around to programming the USB boot driver/software.)
But why can't the RPi4 read the EDID & set the resolution just like the 3B/3B+/3A+ can? :(

Re: Using the pi as my main computer

There is somewhere on the forums, an adapter board that uses multiple RPis, been a while since I saw it, but something like that might work - but it would be easier to wait for the RPi4 to get all its software & drivers sorted out, & use a 4GB version - that should run pretty good, once sorted. 8-)

Re: Current State of Raspberry Pi 4 Software and Hardware Support

My RPi4B/4GB is sitting in its box, it just doesn't have proper functioning software/drivers yet - hopefully it will work properly at some stage - but now isn't the time - maybe next year, at the rate they are working on it. :( Still doesn't have properly functioning EDID, & no USB booting, as at th...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 + Powered USB Hub + 2,5" SSD not working

The RPi4 doesn't boot from USB yet, (still waiting for that since launch)........ so you have to start up using a microSD card with the /boot on it, the rest can be on your USB drive.

Get it through your thick heads - this thread is about the RPi4 USB booting - I know how I could boot from a microSD card, I've booted from a microSD card - I don't want to!!!

I just want to boot from USB, on the RPi4, just like I do on my RPi3B/B+/A+

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

Confused, you've bought one to try out, but cannot be bothered to plug in an SD card and actually use it? Or have you tried it but for reasons that elude many, cannot continue to try it out without USB boot? Surely the best approach is to run with SD card until USB boot is available? What specifica...

Maybe @k-pi is a "serious non-user" Never said that I was a serious RPi user , so do get your facts right , I just have a few to 'test the water' to see how good an arm based computer is/will be, as against Intel/AMD. So far, I'm only trying out the RPi because it's British & easily available...

Re: SD card vs usb Flash drive

The big advantage to using a USB stick/pendrive over that of the microSD card, is ease of replacement in the RPi, it is much easier to swap over a pendrive than to remove & replace a microSD card, let alone the awkwardness of handling those microscopic SD cards. 8-)

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

Separation of storage can be good practice from an admin and reliability pov. On all my regular computers, I have a separate / & /home, sometimes /swap too, dependent on needs, it makes re installing &/or upgrading a reasonably simple process, unlike the Raspbian way of putting everything in one pa...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

I wouldn't get involved with RPi computers until it had 1GB ram & USB boot, that's why my first was a RPi3B, had to borrow & use a microSD card to 'fix' it, but after that all mine boot from USB, pendrives &/or HDD/SSD. So, until the RPi4B gets its 'fix', it'll stay in its box, I've got plenty of pr...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

I've been using Linux & BSD as my computer O/S since 1999, my computers boot from internal disk, or external USB disks & pendrives - it is the normal way to boot a mainstream computer - only the RPi, & similar hobby boards, boots from a microSD card. The RPi4B is now being 'advertised' as a desktop ...

It makes sense to get the one with the most ram that you can afford, the same as with any other computer. 8-)

I bought a 4GB - web browsers have a tendency to need more ram over time, so I should be safe for a few years now. ;)

Re: When can we expect USB boot for the Pi 4?

Remember that the Pi4 was not supposed to be released until "sometime in 2020" (based on comments from RPF/RPT officials). Would you rather wait another year, or have it now to play with, without USB boot? Yep, I'd have waited. If they had been honest, & said that they hadn't got the software...

Looks like it may have been a temporary outage of the server, give it another try, or maybe try a different server, if there is one.
