If you are running your teensy from 3.3v you should be able to hook the tx/rx lines from your teensy straight to your raspberry pi.

you should be able to add the script to /etc/rc.local to have it start at boot. Here's some changes I would make to it. For your original question about finding out about software, if you have a general idea of software that you want to install "apt-cache show [package-name]" can be pretty helpful, it will provide a description and some other information.

I was just planning on using one of these http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/sn74hc244.pdf to buffer the lines, since I have a few on hand. It wouldn't be selectable for input or output, but just using it to play around with stuff shouldn't be a big deal.

you could try using a chroot environment.
