Thanks for the helpful and positive replies everyone, I will post the outcome of testing. Will be a couple of days before I can get a long ethernet cable to test maximum length but will try short first.

PoE + Serial

Hi All, I want to connect my RPI by using only an ethernet cable to the outside world. I have already used a simple PoE by using spare ethernet lines for the 5v, but my question is this: I have purchased a USB - serial cable which works great with the white, black and green lines on the GPIO header....

The Pi just about manages 2 USB webcams at low res - one USB and one IP cam works well (or two IP cams of course).
