the ground is connected via the green-ish cable (see pictures in my post).
the baud rate was set on both devices and tested at 9600 and also 115200 with the same results.

Possibly drop the speed if you are using unshielded cable. Make sure the ground is connected firmly between the two devices. How far apart are they? thank you for your reply. i tried to set the to 9600 but still it behaves the same. i've triple checked the ground connection, it is firmly connected....
