I've looked at the other threads about this - most seem a bit old, and none of the solutions provided has made a difference with my Pis. I've done sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/* and then sudo apt-get clean to no avail. Since the school uses a proxy, I even tried sudo nano /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99fix...

There's always Fuze BASIC (fuzw.co.uk). It's not quite the BASIC I remember from school, but it's pretty close.
