Change password removes taskbar

Hello all, I have just setup 15 raspberry pi 3 with the latest release of stretch desktop 11/2017. I have enabled SSH and VNC on them and can connect fine. As soon as I change the default password, when creating a desktop instance the taskbar at the top of the screen flashes 5 or 6 times and then do...

Re: Can I Teach my 4 Year Old to Program?

If you want to introduce the Computer Science side of things to children I would recommend looking at Barefoot Computing (designed in conjunction with Computing At Schools [CAS]). I have used many of their unplugged and plugged activities with school children at age 5.

Re: MagPi subsciptions not available ?

I managed to create a subscription on select publications this morning and chose 57 as my starting mag. When I received the confirmation email it said I had subscribed from Issue 36. Of course no way of contacting on Saturday so will have to wait until Monday.

Re: Using bote raspberry pi zero micro usb

I accidentally plugged in my power supply to the wrong USB port tonight. I was able to power my zero, but was unable to access any device plugged into the other ports. Hope this helps.

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

Just out of interest, has anyone been able to get this project to work on the original pi? I have a friend who is interested in it, but obviously there are a lot less GPIO pins, presumably it will just be a matter of ensuring the correct GPIO pins are used, or maybe swapping pins around in the softw...

Re: ftp

I am not an expert on this, but I have used FTP on the pi, but swapped he protocol over to SFTP, I was able to browse all directories on my pi - details here -> https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... sh/sftp.md

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

Thanks Chris, Maybe it was just me being silly - I will miss that setup - I think the problem was when I checked the time it wasn't BST. But suppose that isn't really an issue. I have successfully managed to work out which wires are connected to the reed switches (hopefully) and you guys hav been gr...

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

If you are connecting your sensors with screw terminals the end connection should not be a problem. When I tried setting up my Pi with the software, I was unable to proceed because of the lack of RTC but as posts earlier state if it is connected via Ethernet this may not be a problem. Has anyone got...

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

Mine doesn't either - however I ordered the sensors from the website - it was a while ago but don't think I paid any postage.

Out of interest - how do you make your PCBs? I have seen hobbiests creating them using photo paper and an inkjet printer. Then using an iron to transfer it onto the board.

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

Sorry, I misunderstood your initial question. The exact answer is difficult because there is only a 2 core wire running between the sensor and the plug. There are however 6 'grooves' in the plug which could feasibly have held pins. Hopefully my image will be clear enough to see what I mean. Rain Sen...

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

I have the Maplin sensors, and I can confirm they have RJ11 connections. The Rain Gauge and the Anemometer only have two wires into the RJ11 plug, while the Wind Direction has all 4 - the Anemometer appears to plug into the Wind Direction on the Maplin kit. Presumably sparkyhall has just worked out ...

Re: One Minute to Amaze Kids?

I wanted a way to impress a group of children and inspire them to start coding. I used a 'Makey Makey' and created a fruit piano, but you could very easily use the capacitive touch hat for pi to achieve the same result.

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

Chris, Your photos are certainly awesome, and the fact you are using the official software without much editing is a huge bonus. Certainly I would be interested in seeing your diagrams. Have you connected your sensors through the screw terminals? And are you still powering the whole setup over lan? ...

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

I agree that using exactly the same parts would cause some issues. However similar results could be obtained by using sensors like the DHT22, and certainly the DS18B20 sensors work a treat on raspberry pi. I suppose the Maplin instruments could be hard wired onto the boards, however I like getting i...

Re: Connecting wind and rain sensors (build your own station

Hi Gimbal, I too am thinking about building my own weather station using the techniques the team have used for this project. While I am in education, I have been unable to persuade my school to go for this. I have purchased the sensors from Maplin. They do indeed use RJ11 sockets. I would suggest yo...
