Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Nitpicker, I have one of the recent boards made by Benjamin for the Raspberry Pi2. In terms of GPIO pinout, they should be compatible with the RPI3. However, I share your concerns about the PLT133 optical transmitter. It is quite tall and fills the entire space between the board and the status ...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Finally hooked the Rockaberryboard to a different RPi which had the Hifiberry Digi option pre-installed. Works like a charm!
Thanks guys, it was a pleasure!

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Forum, I've soldered my first Rockaberryboard with the parts I got from Benjamin (thank you!). So far I couldn't get any audio out of it. However, I suspect this is a software configuration issue. I use OSMC on an RPI B+. I ran an update of the system software. I followed the instruction for th...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Hi Jörg, thanks for your feedback! C1 and C2 (next to pins 7 and 19) are supposed to stabilize the IC power supplies. I could think of an additional serial inductor, but that would probably have to go onto the bottom layer, then. Does any distribution support SPDIF recording yet? The board dimension...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear all, please find the schematic and the board file for Eagle attached. Note that this layout has not been tested (in fact, it has not even been fabricated yet). Please review carefully. If you have any comments or suggestions, or see anything suspicious, please take a minute and report to this f...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear all, I'm posting a suggestion for an alternative layout. Differences w.r.t. to the previous layout: - A massive GND polygon on the bottom layer - A "rail" for the supply voltage - The optical transmitter is tied to 5V - Shorter data lines without vias - JP2 is to connect a coaxial jack for a SP...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Jörg, thank you very much for your comments and suggestions! I understand that some of the components (such as the EEPROM and the LED) are optional. As for the 0805 footprints: is there any good reason to use smaller ones (stray capacity etc.)? I see that they are quite large, but they offer a ...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Benjamin, thank you sincerely for sharing your work! I must say that your PCB layout looks quite cool. It came out a lot smaller than I expected, despite the additional footprints for future parts! If you have 1 or 2 spare PCBs and would be willing to mail them across, I'd be happy to share the...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Benjamin, thanks again for reviewing and completing the schematic! Questions: 1. I've added serial 220 Ohms resistors to the data lines. I assume they are for protection in case of short-circuited pins? 2. R10 and R12: these seem to be pull-up / pull-downs. Shouldn't these have some more than 4...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Benjamin, thanks for sharing! I'll have a look at the schematic. Yes, I have two optical transmitters, which I got from Mouser. However, I think I saw them at Conrad, too (if are you located in Germany). It was surprisingly tricky to get the 40pin - female connector (the "hat") for the board. I...

Hi Benjamin,

I'd like to join for the PCB. I have the parts, and a first draft of a schematic.

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Forum, I'm attaching a (half-baked) schematic file for the popular Eagle PCB layout editor. The plan is to create a very simple optical TOSLINK output board for the Raspberry 1/2 B+ with a small footprint to fit into the common cases. If anyone who knows what he or she is doing would be willing...

Re: TinyTOSLINK (digital audio output) now for B+, too

Dear Jörg, really, really amazing work! I would be very interested in making one (i.s.o. buying one). Are you willing to share more insights on the layout of your PCB? Do you think it could be made single-sided? I can't tell from the images what exactly is on the other side (the "dark" side of the b...
