Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

Dos this mean: a. The issue is fixed? b. The new boards being distributed? If yes to (b), are they on amazon.co.uk at all? a. The issue is fixed as per: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/poe-hat-revision/ b. The new boards are in the channel, I can't say if Amazon sellers are selling the new or old ...

I'm not aware of this being exposed on the Pi, however it is likely available via the interface on your PoE switch.

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

I was fortunate to receive a prototype of the modified HAT to test. I've written up my analysis, test results etc. A minor correction to that report concerning the words "The inductor and resistor elements, in conjunction with the capacitors provide both high-pass and low-pass filtering ..". There ...

PoE HAT Fan Hysteresis - Now implemented

Aside from the over current issues with the PoE HAT. One other annoying characteristic was that the fan would switch on and off as it went above or below the trigger temperature, without any form of hysteresis (despite what the original overlay specified which indicated it should have 5 DegC of hyst...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

Yes, it doesn't work correctly in some circumstance. Finding those exact circumstances (we could not replicate the issue in house!) took a while with some great help from community members. Just as an anecdote, some community members sent guaranteed non-working devices, including the Pi3 they were ...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

James, the updated software would have provided the fan driver so the fan would be turning on and off. One of my combinations of HAT and Pi that triggered the warnings under low/no-load would sometimes trigger the warning each time the fan started and stopped. Forcing the fan to always be on (or off...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

Is that the state of affairs at the moment? Yep pretty much, as the problem is with the PoE HAT and their isn't a new design out yet, you are likely to still have the same problem with any replacement. So better to source a refund, or await the blog post that is apparently coming with some possible...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

An extra question: is anyone knows if there is a power priority management if both 5V PSU & PoE are connected? I can't see that is any different from powering via the micro-USB socket and the GPIO header at the same time. There is no sensing upwind of the output side of the polyfuse which could be ...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

I'm curious do any of the mods to the final output stage change the characteristic of the the PoE-HAT when the attached Pi is powered off? Just tried the same thing. Set the temp to 5 degress, so the fan is always on. Connected up a USB light, a USB flash drive, an iPhone and an Android phone and they all worked, and no errors logged. Switched showed it consuming 9.5W which seems low, even if dealing with 48V supply. Disconnecting the ...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

@grozzie Nice that you found a way to make it work and I think it supports @blasters suggestion that it might be on the output power stage of the HAT that has the issue, I suspect the microUSB port may have some further components to clean up the input. Though a better solution if you're happy with ...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

Thanks for all your work @The_Raven. Is it the physical distance that makes the difference, for example with long leads/wires attached if you move it close to the RPi does it start to fail. Or is it the length/resistance of the cables that are making a difference? I'm assuming it's physical proximit...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

Would be good to see if anyone has a 40pin ribbon cable could attack all the GPIO pins + the 4pins for the PoE Header. This would determine if there was something being misconfigured on the rest of the GPIO header. I can't do this till I get home from work, and will post results then if nobody else ...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

Interesting observation @The_Raven. Suggesting this is some sort of RFI issue, how far away have you moved the PoE HAT from the RPi? For example have you just raised it up ~1cm with extensions to the headers, or did you move it to the end of a 40way cable + extra connections for the 4 PoE specific h...

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

Not sure if this is useful information or not. I noticed that the rpi_poe_fan driver had been updated, so performing an rpi-update updated my RPi to rpi_poe_fan module and kernel to 4.14.67-v7+ Since performing that update the dmesg logs are now constantly filling with over-current warnings, without...

I too had the same issue with the updated overlay not working. It looks like 4 days ago there was a code change submitted (https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/commit/0f937c8dc3201ebffa6c617c616fd7c65db65959) which modified the file: rpi-poe-overlay.dts Since the new driver that included the rest of...

On the over-current warnings, this is something being tracked in this thread: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 5&t=220984
Sorry due to the over-current issues, I've not experimented with altering the fan profile myself.

Re: PoE HAT - USB Ports not working - over-current

My 3rd PoE-HAT has arrived, and as before fails in the same way. I'd love to hear that anyone has been able to use his HAT reliably with USB devices connected, just to see if we can help identify any differences.
