Looking for tips/'best practice' for maintaining email and web server security

Hi, I have set up my raspberrypi4 as a postfix/dovecot-based email server, and an apache2-based web and cloud server with Nextcloud. I have enabled https-only on the apache2 server, along with encryption (see below), and I have implemented a number of security protocols for the email server (also be...

[solved] Re: Razer keyboard doesn't dim lights on lxde screensaver

Solved.

I had disabled ScreensaverAND Screen Locker. (I hate xscreensaver.)

Re-enabling Screen Locker, and then setting timeout options etc. via xfce4-power-manager got things working.

My keyboard now dims on screen blanking, and illuminated in successful screen unlock.

Re: More disks on RPI4B -> Powered HUB or bigger supply ?

I use a powered USB hub (actually, a Toshiba U3 Dynadock) to connect two 1TB USB drives to my pi4 for my nextcloud server.

Re: 'buster': apt-get update > no new updates for days...

Thanks all,

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/apt/history.log
shows my last updates/installs a week ago, on the 11th.

I'll keep my eye open and see if anything comes down the pipe in the next few days.

Cheers.

'buster': apt-get update > no new updates for days...

Hi,

My webmin dashboard page is always nagging me about new packages being available.

However, I've not been nagged for a week or two now, and 'apt-get update' tells me no new packages to be installed.

Can this be right..?

Thanks very much.

Razer keyboard doesn't dim lights on lxde screensaver

Hi, I've been using a Razer gaming keyboard successfully with my Pi3 running the Mate desktop environment for some time. I have now switched over to the Pixel desktop environment (and am really noticing the performance improvement). Under Mate, when the screensaver kicked-in and the monitor powered ...

[SOLVED] Re: Dovecot/Postfix - https with CACert.org works, fails with letsencrypt

So, I created separate certs for both web server and mail server, and now it all works fine.

I understood it that with the letsencrypt certbot, using '-d' allowed you to add multiple domains into one certificate.

If so, this didn't work for me...

Re: Dovecot/Postfix - https with CACert.org works, fails with letsencrypt

@bls I didn't check the other logs, so will do that now @rpdom Yes, my web server is server.org, and my mail server is mail.server.org. I included only the web server in the letsencrypt setup. I then re-ran the setup and included the mail server, and letsencrypt setup asked me if I wanted to expand ...

Re: cables and casing

And do NOT buy an official pi4 case - it's a closed box inside which your pi will quickly reach max operating temperature and likely start throttling performance.

This lesson cost me $13 AUD. Buy Something that is open, like Pimoroni coupes, or something with in-built cooling, like the FLIRC.

Dovecot/Postfix - https with CACert.org works, fails with letsencrypt

Hi, I'm stumped. I have postfix / dovecot / apache2 all working great with certificates generated at CACert.org. (I have two certs, one for my mail server, one for my webserver - for no particular reason!) My certs are coming up for renewal, and I've read a few posts recommending Let's Encrypt, and ...

Re: Raspberry 3,vpn and android

I know my DD WRT-based router can act *either* as VPN client *or* VPN server; I use the latter, as I wish to connect 'in' to my network. I therefore do not think that a single pi can function as both client and server - you'd thus need a pi for each: a pi to act as VPN client, and gateway for the ho...

Youtube video of Pi 4 FLIRC case testing: https://youtu.be/vkLr08K0c1E Sounds like it is perfectly adequate. I've got one on order for my second Pi 4. I have a case with a small fan and 4 small heat sinks, idling at 42C ambient 22C. Thanks - I was unsure, but then I watched the video. Ordered one, ...

Re: RPI 4 - broken twice

The point of my earlier post in this thread was about the complete unsuitability of the official pi4 case to perform. I can't imagine any scenario (other than operating in an Antarctic environment) where the pi4 is being used meaningfully that wouldn't see it heat up to 80+ degC, and potentially sta...

Re: RPI 4 - broken twice

Official raspberrypi 4 case is effectively useless as sold, IMO. I've now got my 2GB version up-and-running headless, as a Nextcloud server and postfix/dovecot mail server. Just idling away it's running at 81 degC; I took the top part of the case off, and it now runs at 66 degC. Even if I were to ad...

My rpi3B works great with postfix / dovecot / spamassasin / dmarc / fail2ban / apache2 + rainloop. I've all-but-ditched the my gmail account, using instead my private email server. I also run nextcloud on the rpi3, and will be upgrading to a rpi4 soon, as it cannot serve my media fast enough. The rp...

[SOLVED] Re: postfix / dovecot deleted email retention policy / setting

What a fool I am...

My iPhone had Accounts > Advanced > Deleted Messages: Remove after one week.

And on reflection, I read/delete emails mostly on my iPhone; and my server/email is not an exchange-type account.

Sorted :)

I can't seem to figure out which postfix / dovecot .conf file I should tweak (and with what setti...

Re: Nextcloud: help to convert database from SQLite to MySQL [SOLVED]

I'm marking this as solved. All that was required was to: 1. Create the new SQL user 2. Create the new database 3. Run the command 'php occ db:convert-type --all-apps mysql oc_mysql_user 127.0.0.1 new_db_name' See: https://www.a2hosting.com/kb/developer-corner/mysql/managing-mysql-databases-and-user...

Your steps are very different to what Next...
