If you do a search for Touchpad PS2 or Synaptics PS2 on google there are loads of articles that explain how to do it with Synaptics Touchpads, I think Synaptics make most of the touchpads around. There are also datasheets around for some of the Synaptics pads.

Just a minor gripe. Some of the colour combinations for text and background colour make it difficult to read.

Velcro should make a good mounting medium. It will provide a fixing and insulation in one.

Laterally thinking. I have also considered not trying to fix the board but fix the cables which will be a lot simpler and allow them to support the board.
