.jar files opening with xArchiver rather than running JRE.

Hello. I posted a similar question in a less appropriate section of the forum so I'll try again here. I have a simple, novice question. Why to my executable .jar files open an xArchiver file browser window when I double click them? Shouldn't these files just run when double-clicked? I understand tha...

Re: Running .jar files with a double-click

my mistake. the myapp.desktop file DOES work with terminal=false. It just takes a reeeeally long time to open. This is a solution but I'm still searching for an answer as to running the .jar files by double-clicking them directly and to assigning them custom icons.

Re: Running .jar files with a double-click

I tried adding a myapp.desktop file pointing directly to the .jar. That did nothing. I changed terminal to true. It opened the terminal which eventually opened the app. I understand I can then sleep the terminal window. I built an executable shell script that runs the app successfully through the te...

Running .jar files with a double-click

Hello, thanks for looking. I have two simple, open source java apps that I was using on my raspbian system. These two apps had run, though slowly in the past. The .jars have not been changed since then and still run on other systems. My raspbian version is updated and I've installed the OpenJRE7 and...

Which window system is Raspbian running?

Hello,

I want to run a Debian distro on my Mac that is as similar to raspbian as possible & I am wondering if Raspbian is running gnome, kde, lxde, xfce or some other flavor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Backing up sd card to disk image

OK, great suggestions. I have read conflicting info on running a backup of the currently booted system. I'll take your word for itI will try to run another backup with the SD card mounted in an external SD card reader & when I do that I will add the conv=noerror, sync and bs=1M to the end of the line...

Re: Backing up sd card to disk image

Nevermind that last post. I forgot to add "sudo". It seems to be working but I'm sure it will take some time to write the file. I'll report back when it's all done & verified.

Thanks!

Re: Backing up sd card to disk image

Darn! Permission denied accessing the sd card. Do I need to log in as root for this?

Re: Backing up sd card to disk image

Excellent! Thank you. I guess I better recheck the sda/sdb question to be sure. I may have had an extra drive attached. Am I correct in assuming that it does not matter which usb port the drive is plugged into when referencing it? Lucky for me it looks like I don't need to know in order to make a ba...

Using VLC Media Player under Raspbian

Hello, thank you for reading. I have attempted to install XBMC under raspbian & come upon the many, many problems & work-arounds & supposedly successful methods to install & run XBMC. I am aware that there are custom distros for that… So, I decided to settle for a simpler situation with a VLC instal...

Re: Backing up sd card to disk image

OK thanks, so assuming that only the sd card booted with Raspbian and the one usb flash drive are connected, you would suggest a line like this? dd if= /dev/mmcblk0/ of=/dev/sdb1/backupfile.img Does that look correct to you? I've researched so many different methods, all very different some very com...

Backing up sd card to disk image

I'm hoping to use this bit of command line to back up all of my progress under raspbian to a disk image file that I could use to restore or duplicate my system… dd if=/dev/sdb of=/path/to/backupfile.img I want to create the disk image on a usb flash drive. It looks like the path to the usb flash dri...

Re: Bluetooth manager no window appears

After reading this thread more carefully I was able to monkey through it. It works great now. I think future (novice) readers would benefit from an explanation of what is being done here. Are we adding to the existing group file or making a new one? Why does this work? Was the default "pi" user not ...

Re: Bluetooth manager no window appears

I am having this same issue. I have located the /etc/group file, opened it and added the pi user to the bluetooth line as shown above but I am not being allowed to save the file. Do I have to be logged in as root? I've installed java, gimp, stella, made a custom font folder & a dozen other things so...
