ARM Laptops/netbooks

So, my ThinkPad X61 has given up the ghost, it's been giving me more and more problems and now it's finally dropped dead. Do there exist any decentish and cheap ARM devices, preferably running Ubuntu, with a screen and a keyboard of reasonable build quality? Specs aren't too important, I mainly use ...

Re: Installing software on SD card

Hmmmm, I can't say either way whether it would work or not. I'm running headless now so I can't test it for you either. To be on the safe side, I'd reimage the card with Win32DiskImager but it may work as is.

Re: Installing software on SD card

By the sounds of it, you'll be fine. Did you use Win32DiskImager to do it? If you used that or something similar, you should be fine.

Webmin Guide

After losing this the first time round by closing the wrong tab, it's time for a Webmin guide. This assumes you're running headless over SSH and want to be able to easily manage your Pi server with a GUI. Webmin is perfect for that job. So, firstly let's get all the dependencies etc. out of the way....

I tried all night last night, but HDParm kept giving me errors, so I'm tempted to try it in an old USB/SATA bridge from a TrekStor caddy that behaved quite well, in terms of spinning itself down...

Re: Pi naughtily leeching power...

The problem is, standards are only as good as the company following them.
I've severed the power line now and the Pi is running happily, the USB cable is too, which is always nice.
Thanks for the help

Spinning down HDD?

I've hunted around on various forums but everything seems distro specific. I'm running the latest debian image from a USB Laptop HDD and want it to spin down when idle for a period of time so the drive doesn't end up dying on me. I've tried HDParam on it but get SG_IO bad/missing sense data. Any inp...

Re: Journal Errors?

So, from what I can tell, the USB reinitialises at some point during the boot process, losing the root FS mount and therefore making the Pi very sad indeed. It's just after Starting NFS common utilities, which fails, then a big scrolling line of text with INIT errors and respawning and terminating p...

Journal Errors?

So, I have my Pi booting from SD and handing over to the SD card on the stock image with newest kernel, however, when I get to the login stage, I type my username (pi) hit enter, it hangs for a while then I get presented with page errors, then journal commit I/O errors and then EXT4-fs errors. Any i...

Re: Pi naughtily leeching power...

IIRC the USB fuse is around 140mA and the Pi power draw is at least twice that, so it won't be doing your polyfuse any favours.

Re: Pi naughtily leeching power...

Yep, that's what my Pi was doing, it was drawing power from the hub it was connected to. But isn't this going to circumvent some of the power protection circuitry, seeing as the power is going "the wrong way"? And the polyfuses would overheat..or at least, I'd expect them to.

Automatically connecting to Network share?

I've got my Pi setup headless now and want to set it up to automatically connect to a Windows share running on a LinkStation Live for torrenting (Linux distros, obviously).
How would I go about setting it to mount automatically, given the fact the share is passworded etc.
Thanks

Re: USB Keyboard kernel panic

I've had the same issue, it appears to be cheap USB keyboards.
In theory, if you put your SD card into a PC and rename boot_enable_ssh.rc to boot.rc then login to your router to find the Lan IP, SSH should work once the pi boots.

Pi naughtily leeching power...

So, I was just setting up my Pi, with it plugged into a keyboard with built in hub that also plugged into my USB PSU so the keyboard wasn't being powered by the Pi. I pulled the Micro USB out of the Pi to kill it because it needed moving, but it was still powered through the USB A port. I yanked it ...

Simple Pi Battery Power

I've been playing around with my Pi and I can't get my BenQ monitor to play ball with it, so I used my TV downstairs to get it setup, but I was too lazy to fiddle around with plugs, so I whacked in my TeckNet 7000mAh battery and the Pi runs fine off it. In theory, could power the Pi for 6-7 hours I ...

Pi dead as a doornail

Was in the wrong forum, deleted my old thread and moved here.. Just got my very own Pi, and I had everything all ready to rock and roll, but I seem to have come to a bit of a stumbling block, firstly, my Pi seems very different from all the ones on the sites, so I just had to really guess where all ...
